It’s been 12 years since the greatest sports moment I’ve ever witnessed took place. On May 13th, 2012 my beloved Manchester City Blues went into the final day of the Premier League season with a chance to win their first league title since the 1967-68 season. To do that, they had to match the result of their cross-town rivals Manchester United, who were taking on Sunderland. To sum it all up, if Manchester City could just beat lowly QPR at home they would win the league.

The game began with a buzz as 48,000 fans packed into the Ethiad Stadium in Manchester. City had opportunities early that they couldn’t finish, but in the 39th minute City defender Pablo Zabaleta put one past QPR’s keeper to score his first goal of the season and put City up 1-0.

City would go into half up 1-0. Meanwhile, at the Stadium of Light, Wayne Rooney scored for Manchester United giving them a 1-0 lead over Sunderland. That meant that City needed to keep their lead through the second half in order to win the league.

The second half couldn’t have started worse for Manchester City as QPR equalized just three minutes into the half. The mood was obviously down until QPR’s Joey Barton was sent off with a straight red card. QPR would go down to 10 men for the rest of the match, but that wouldn’t stop them from scoring again in the 66th minute and taking a 2-1 lead.

The vibes were bad. The mood was horrible. “Same old City” as the phrase used to go. I was a mess. How could we possibly lose at home to a bad QPR side that had to play a man down? It was a nightmare scenario.

City continued to attack, but to no avail. At the end of regulation time City needed to score two more goals to win the league title. Five minutes of stoppage time were added on at the end of regulation and Manchester City continued their attack. In the second of those extra five minutes substitute Edin Džeko equalized for the Blues, powering a header past QPR’s goalkeeper on a corner kick.

At the kickoff QPR oddly played the ball deep into Manchester City’s side of the field and out of play. City got the ball and worked it up the field, but couldn’t find their way through for another goal. After QPR cleared the ball again, City carried the ball up the field for one final attack.

Meanwhile, at this point the Manchester United game vs Sunderland had ended with United winning 1-0, which meant that Manchester City had to defeat QPR to win the league on goal differential.

As City were bringing the ball up the field, striker Sergio Agüero played a ball at the top of the box to striker Mario Balotelli, who was brought down, but still managed to play a pass back to Agüero who was cutting into the box. Then, with 93:20 on the game clock, the greatest sports moment I’ve ever witnessed happened..

I still get chills watching that video and hearing that unbelievable call from Martin Tyler. The drama of not only scoring two goals in stoppage time to win the game and your first league title in forever, but to also snatch the league title away from your bitter rival….CHEF’S KISS!

Quick side bar: I was living in Florida at the time of this game. When this moment happened I was at my parents house and I ran outside screaming and going nuts. I basically blacked out and came to in the middle of the street halfway across their neighborhood. I’m sure their neighbors thought I was on drugs or something.

This moment continues to live on for me and it will forever have a special place in my heart. This goal started Manchester City on a run that has been more than I, or any other Manchester City fan could ever dream of.

Here are some great videos if you want to watch how this entire scenario played out on that fateful day in 2012. If you’re like me and enjoy timeless sports calls, you’ll enjoy these.
