FINALLY, the Cavaliers have done something in free agency. On Tuesday morning, the Cavaliers made it official by announcing a three-year max extension for star Donovan Mitchell. The deal is for $150.3 million and it includes a player option for 2027-2028.
Mitchell is coming of averaging 26.6 points per game and earning his fifth straight All-Star appearance.
This is a big move, solidifying that Cleveland has their star for a couple more seasons at least.
It appears that Mitchell and new head coach Kenny Atkinson have created a strong bond early on which is a good sign. Mitchell and Atkinson have reportedly been in contact quite a bit.
Now that Mitchell is secured, it’s time for Koby Altman and Mike Gansey to get to work. The Cavaliers are coming off of an Eastern Conference semifinals exit and they can’t just stand pat. They selected Jaylon Tyson in last week’s draft, but they’ve done nothing else as others have started signing and trading across the league. The Celtics are defending champions. The Knicks just got stronger adding Mikal Bridges. The 76ers added Paul George. The Bucks aren’t going to be without Dame or Giannis again due to injury. The Magic are a young team with cap space.
The Cavs completed the first massive task on their off-season to do list. Now it’s time to knock out the rest.
