Reports started swirling late Wednesday evening that Mauricio Pochettino has agreed to become the next manager of the U.S Men’s National soccer team. Twitter user Andrew_S04 had the news first.
The news has since been confirmed by all of the insiders and news sources in the world football industry.
This was an excellent signing by USMNT technical director, Matt Crocker. I wrote a piece a while back about how he had to nail this pick and I believe he’s done that with the hiring of Pochettino. Both Matt Crocker and Mauricio Pochettino have worked together before. Crocker was the technical director for Southampton where he brought in Mauricio Pochettino to manage his club. Pochettino would go on to lead the Saints to an 8th-place finish in the Premier League, which tied their highest ever finish.

In 2014 Pochettino became the manager of Tottenham, where he had success, leading the Spurs to a 2nd-place finish in the 2016-17 Premier League campaign. He would also lead Tottenham to their only Champions League final in 2019.

In 2021 Pochettino would join the French side Paris Saint-Germain where he would go on to win the Ligue 1 title and the Coupe de France in his only season in charge.

Pochettino’s most recent coaching job was a brief stop at Premier League club Chelsea, where he spent one season as their manager and decided to leave. Speculation circled at the time that he and new owner Todd Boehly did not see eye-to-eye.
Mauricio Pochettino is a well respected name and coach in world football. He has had success everywhere he’s been. This was an extremely great hire by the USMNT. The impossible pipe dream was Jürgen Klopp, but if you would have told me months ago that they would hire Mauricio Pochettino I would have called you crazy. Pochettino is a high-profile manager who can come in and command the respect from the great group of players that the USMNT currently has.
This is an excellent hire and U.S. soccer fans should be ecstatic. Kudos to Matt Crocker and the U.S. Soccer Federation for hitting this one out of the park.
It’s time to celebrate, America. WE’RE SO BACK!
